BEING THANKFUL IS HEALTHY FOR YOUR BRAIN

Advancements in brain imaging over the last decade have made it much easier to measure the health of the brain. In a recent scientific study, scientists wanted to see which emotion stimulated the brain in the most positive way. Participants were asked to focus on various emotions to see which one had the healthiest impact on the brain. When I first heard about this study, I thought the emotion of love would stimulate the brain the greatest. However, to my surprise, this experiment showed that the emotion that stimulated the brain in the most positive way was the emotion of gratitude. The conclusion of this study demonstrates that being thankful and thinking thoughts of gratitude affect the brain in the healthiest way.

Wellness Application: Take time everyday to think about all of the blessings you have that money cannot buy. Think about the love of your friends and family, your health, the country you live in, the beauty of nature around you and how much God loves you. Keep a “gratitude” journal on a regular basis and list all of the things you are thankful for.

“Rejoice always, pray continually, and give thanks in all circumstances…” Thessalonians 5:16-17 (NIV)
